DIY Starfish

For my recent media experimentation, I wanted to do something I never did before! Paper mache. It might sound weird but nope I never tried it out. I looked up on YouTube and came across an amazing video whereby explaining the steps clearly.

I used the same base as she did,

  • Cardboard starfish outline
  • newspaper
  • masking tape
The next steps were carried out differently as I used normal acrylic paint and no copper coating. Only 2 thick coatings were necessary to give the starfish it's colour and on top I used silica sand for the texture. And that's it :) your own DIY starfish.
Just make sure to follow the steps and regular acrylic paint works as well!

The results are below:

Photography- Animal

This is actually the same cat that was previously posted in a different pose as I was doing multiple shoots. A day in the life of a cat? Sleeping!

Fierce cat

Major Update
I would like to say that for some time, I would be posting mainly photography level snaps which I took randomly as I shoot for fun. Also yes, I'd love to share those with you, my viewers/readers/subscribers :) and passer by!
Stay inspired!
Nadia.

This picture was taken yesterday at Grand Bassin when I took multiple shoots of the same cat. It kind of look like the cat version of a tiger!

Sketchbook- Sketch models

You must be wondering what's a sketch model! So yeah, a sketch model is a  replica of how your end product will look like BUT using scrap materials like cardboard, wool, chicken wire, paper etc. it can be anything!
Below are my 3 sketch models I did for my 3D project.

Using plywood and bending wire as spring

Using cardboard and spring made out of bending wire

Using cardboard, plywood and woolen string

Importance of sketch models:
Just like an architect would test his design to check for stability and balance against natural disasters, you should test your design as well.
Sketch models fit in exactly for this purpose so as to be able to visually notice errors and make necessary changes.

  • Image 1: Testing the weight of the plywood body against the strength of the springs
  • Image 2: Testing the flexibility when using several springs
  • Image 3: Testing the solidity of the body
During my making of, the sketch models helped out greatly as I noticed the springs wouldn't hold the weight and I was able to successfully balance off the weight with the springs and the tail of the fish at the end :)
Remember to always test designs and yeah sketch models yields in additional marks :D

Sketchbook- Idea development, Making of & Evaluation

Part 2- 'How to create a sketchbook'
After defining possible criteria and visual analysis, the next step is idea development. What is it exactly?
  1. Your random ideas. (any possible idea you may think of!, normally 15)
  2. 5 proposals out of the 15 random ideas
  3. Evaluate the 5 proposals against your defined criteria and assess. (Assessing is optional but helps to have a more accurate idea)
  4. Develop the 5 proposals in depth. (Material, Not to scale dimensions, possible improvements)
  5. Choose your final idea after assessing :)

Keep your labels as simple as possible

Generating random ideas (1-15)

Choosing 5 proposals out of random ideas

Assess your proposals

Developing the proposals

Overview of chosen idea in 2D/3D

Still keeping the labels simple

Finding all the appropriate shapes for the pull toy as it is for kids, remember to match against criteria. May take up a lot of pages.

Overall dimension

Materials and quantity to be used
Colour swatches for the final product
Actual materials to be used

Add pictures of your making of process

Sketch models to test for possible flaws and what will work/not

Evaluation against criteria
And voila! You're done creating a sketchbook :)
I hope it helps anyone out there having no clue as to how to start a sketchbook! Good luck!

Sketchbook- Mindmapping & Visual analysis

A big hello to all my readers and followers :)
For this assignment, we had to create a sketchbook following the making of a 3D pull toy! (Ps: my first sketchbook lol)
I'll be posting part of it everyday until completion and more to come!

Stay tuned,
Nadia.

1. Define your criteria and do a mind mapping

2. Visual Analysis

Continue with visual analysis meaning studies of your chosen subject matter in depth and detail. (Mine was my goldfish)

Part 2 being the idea development will be posted soon.

Why this blog?
